News on cricket in the United States

The new USA governing body will be called "USA Cricket" and a new logo has been unveiled.  For more details click here for the link and more on the story.

The Division 3 tournament started May 23 in Uganda.  The USA finished in the middle neither moving up to Division 2 or being relegated to Division 4, so for now stay in Division 3.  The USA then went to Canada where they won the Auty Cup 2-1, winning this tournament for the first time since 1991.

Former captain of England's woman's cricket team, Charlotte Edwards, was just in Texas to help train and coach USA players in advance of the ICC Europe T20 qualifier in Scotland this coming August working towards the T20 world championship in 2018.  The USA woman's team has only recently been put together after years of non-activity due to the suspension of the USACA but after try-outs last summer and a match against the Marylebone CC from England in September there is now a basis for a team again.

As part of the qualification process for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, Division 4 of the ICC’s World Cricket League was played in Los Angeles with teams including the USA, Bermuda, Italy, Denmark, Oman and Jersey, with the top two teams progressing to Division 3, but the bottom two dropping to division 5 (the lowest level of international play).  The USA started strong with an easy win over Burmuda and then a tight 1 wicket win against Italy.  Then against unbeaten Oman they powered ahead with a  century performance by captain Steven Taylor and a 5 wicket take from Timil Patel to in handily.  But against Denmark they sputtered at the end and then could not get out top order batters to lose.  They then suffered a tough one run loss to Jersey needing 6 runs in the final over to win but just not making it.  Despite the final 2 losses the USA made it to the final and then again beat Oman to win the Division 4 tournament and will now move up to Division 3.

Thanks to Dave Beigel who joined me in LA for the Oman match.

February 2017: The ICC America's team, made up of players from Canada and the USA, played in the NAGICO Super50 tournament in the Caribbean.  After losing all 6 matches in 2016 the Americas team did manage to pick up a win this year and played quite well through the tournament, especially considering the USA captain played for Barbados and others could not make it.  the gradual improve, ment of the US conrinues.

The American Cricket Federation (ACF), for which the Gothic Cricket Club is a member, was awarded tax exempt classification so that all donations are now tax deductible.  --The picture above is of the US- Canada NACC championship in Feb. 2015- the USA team (Florida All-Stars) are batting wearing the yellow.
The USACA completed holding their version of the USA national championships and i have to say it read more like a Marx Brothers movie than a top flight cricket tournament.  In one match a team was denied moving on as the stadium lights were shut off while they were batting, with a chance still to win and continue in the tournament.  But since it was a draw they did not make the cut off and were sent home.  The final is so strange that i will link you to the ESPN coverage so click here for that report, and then here for an analysis of USA cricket under the USACA. The jist of it is that one team, USA Development XI, won an exciting match on the last ball, but then 40 minutes later the USACA awarded the trophy to South East citing a rule (incorrectly) that gave 5 runs to South East for the win.  To make it even 'stranger', the USA Development team included players from the ACF member So. CA cricket association.  Amazing.
